Dick Hershberger called this his best cross ever. Texas Babe was out of Hiram Walker who was out of Mack Twain.
MACK TWAIN should be in
the TWBFA HALL OF FAME! As happens sometimes a dog gets overlooked and
then as new dogs come along the older dogs gets pushed aside. I ask and
urge all TWBFA members to please consider voting for MACK TWAIN for
induction into the HALL OF FAME! This is something that has been
overlooked far to long.
There are numerous strains in the Treeing Walker Breed.
One of the strains that produced what real coonhunters would call real
coonhounds was MACK TWAIN!
About the time that the Treeing Walker Breed was getting started and established another single registered Treeing Walker that was from Foxhounds that loved to tree and was track driving, cold nose very hard tree dogs was introduced to the public. Mack Twain was one of the top dogs of his day. Still if you go back far enough you will find Mack Twain in some of the better hounds. The strain was introduced to the public a great deal by John Cason who also owned Nite Ch. California Mack. California Mack and a son of Calif. Mack, Nite Ch. California Mack Twain Jr. were responsible for producing many track driving, cold nose, very hard tree dogs that are what the MACK TWAIN strain is known for. Dick Herberger's best female Nite Ch. Hershberger's Texas Babe was a grand daugther of Mack Twain.
This strain is noted for many fine traits people look for in a coonhound. It is one of the best all around strains that is at home in any terrain. The Mack Twain Strain excels under any conditions. The Mack Twain Strain is noted for its easiness to handle, for outstanding cold noses, the desire and determination to finish what they start. They aren't trashy and are easy to have a straight hound with them. They are as hard and natural tree dogs as any strain, and with this strain you don't get the ill dog at the tree. They are good looking hounds with good bawl mouths and there is not a strain that has more guts, colder noses or any harder tree dogs.
